I watch things. I think this helps as a writer to notice stuff, and I think with my law enforcement background it became a bit of a habit. I love to watch people and use them as character types in my books as well as using some of the things they actually do in my stories. I’ve also found some unusual things in observing what people do. Did you know when you are driving and turn to look at the passenger, your car begins to move slightly to the right. It’s a body mechanics thing, and has to be countered with deliberate forethought, especially if you’re looking in the backseat screaming at the kids to settle them down…. I also noticed that people who focus their looking at approaching vehicles on a two lane highway will make their own car edge closer to the yellow line as they pass without realizing it. That one I thought was truly weird!
Taking notice is important in life. Taking action as a result can be even more important. Seeing the horror of life in Texas after Hurricane Harvey is a scene I hope to never live through and look at close up. I hope you all act on your observations of it, and give to the charities that are trying to help those folks. Observation without action can be a disappointing thing. Pay attention to that yellow line on the highway, too.
