I’ve been asked at times, “who are your favorite authors.” After all, a writer should above all, first and foremost be a reader of books. Even though it’s sometimes tough with my writing schedule and all the rest that goes on in life, I do get to read other writers. Among them my favorites are pretty predictable because they write like I do. C.J. Box, Nevada Barr, Craig Johnson, and Tony and Anne Hillerman lead the pack for me. In the past, I’ve spent a lot of time reading thrillers and Dean Koontz hooked me into reading everything he wrote, even the old Richard Bachmann books he published under that name, because he was too prolific for his publisher’s liking. I just finished his book Good Guy, which has been out for quite a while, and I really loved it. Many don’t know that he also wrote a rather Zany semi romantic humorous story (the title escapes me right now) and I also took to heart his short book on writing and how to be an author. I was on a Science Fiction and Fantasy jag in my younger years and still read one now and again. Of course my all time favorites in that genre are Isaac Asimov and Frank Herbert. Of course the Harry Potter series tops that fantasy list, but Terry Brooks’ series was also a favorite. There are so many new entries into those genres these days, I can’t keep up with them.
I’ve been asked “don’t you love Arthur Conan Doyle?” I’ve read a lot of his writing, but like Doyle himself, I got tired of the character and his perfection. Doyle had to kill him off to stop writing him, but I’ve been kinder and just set him aside. It frustrated Doyle a lot, after he killed Sherlock off, that he couldn’t sell anything else he wrote and had to bring Sherlock back to life again. I’m always up for suggestions on good authors, and my beta readers/editors, Ron and Karen Angier often give me some excellent authors to read. If you have any favorites, I’d love to hear about them.
