Being a firefighter/medic is a challenging and sometimes very exciting job. It’s also backbreaking hard work. One of the things I enjoyed most though, about being a fire captain, was having the opportunity to work with the fire marshal and do community education activities on fire safety. Among those activities, my favorite was reading firefighter stories to kids at the library and then talking about fire safety with them and their parents. The thing I found most exciting and rewarding about it was not only the idea that I could be preventing disaster in their lives, but that I was giving them the gift of reading in the process. I don’t know if you read to your kids, I don’t even know if you read yourself. It’s becoming a lost pastime in our electronic entertainment world. What I do know is that reading is a different kind of experience than using video games and watching movies. You have to use your brain to imagine the story and a whole different part of your mental capacity gets enlarged…it’s called your imagination and it’s powerful.
Teach your kids to imagine! Give them that gift.
