I am sitting here with the realization that I am a child of the Turn Signal Generation. We were the last to know the thrill of ever sticking your arm out of the car window straight for a left turn and up for a right turn in freezing rain and snow. Yes, people used to do that cupcake! We had to learn that in order to get a driver’s license even though turn signals had been invented already. Our ancestor’s hands weren’t filled with a cell phone to text or talk on while driving, so they could still hold the steering wheel and use the other hand to keep people from crashing into them when they decided to make a change in direction in traffic. Soon, the current generation will be the last to drive a car that even has a steering wheel. Once upon a time, when you rolled into a gas station, two or three people ran out to meet you and washed your windows and checked the air in your tires while THEY pumped your gas and checked the oil.
Yes, the future is coming. It is roaring down upon us like a freight train, and it will be very different and the changes will come with exponential speed. I am nearly finished with another Novella, “Life on Earth – Digital Disaster”that examines the futuristic and probable events that might happen in just 30 or 40 years. For those who’ve read Life on Earth…Really?it’s sort of a continuation of that theme and characters. It’s a satire with some religious overtones designed to make a person think…and perhaps even laugh. Nonetheless, I seriously think we are stepping into a very unsure type of future. I read the other day that a well-known futurist believes that robots and computers will one day be so sophisticated that they will learn and become wise enough to disobey human programming orders. What was that noise? Hal, is that you…? Hal…
