Right now I’m tracking the news about wildfires in a way I never have before. Both the house I’m selling and the one I am moving into are in danger from huge wildfires. How lucky is that? I could not believe that both would be in that situation at the same time. The one I intend to sell is more in danger than the one I moved into, so I suppose I can view that as a positive takeaway. The weather is being weird, and low humidity, high winds, and high temperatures are prevailing at a time when we usually are looking for the monsoon rains to start in the Rockies. With luck the firefighters that I led until recently, and those from other agencies will successfully fight off this terror and save my house and the town of Durango.
The fire in Arizona is less concerning and doesn’t pose a very serious threat, but my neighbor took me outside and pointed to where the last fire struck, and was stopped just a quarter mile from my new home. The old healed fire scar along a now absent treeline below the ridge marks a stark reality to my neighbor. Nothing is permanent or secure in life, not even life itself. I hope you all take the time to live it the best way you can, enjoy those you love and visit the places that give you joy while they are there…and if you are a writer, write about it while you can. That way the memory lives on in spite of what life may take away.
