I was thinking the other day about what a challenge it is when you are involved in a long distance move that is delayed. For many months I was dealing with that and so found myself managing two separate lives. As I contemplated that, I realized that I was really managing four separate lives in four different places, because I was in the process of writing two novels during all this physical move process... Yes, I know, you are probably scratching your head and perhaps saying “yeah, big deal.” I think the truth is, though, that when you write, you are so intimately involved with the people and place of your story and what they are doing, that it can become as real and mentally/emotionally time consuming as the “real life” places you live. If you are not careful, it can be pretty draining to “live” in all those places. I know writing two novels at the same time is not my ideal way to work. (Managing the real people and demands in my flesh and blood life is difficult enough sometimes, that living physically in two places is not my ideal either!)
Here’s the point I want to make though, and that is that your fiction writing is real to you. At least in the realm and time period that you are actually creating and editing what you are writing. If it’s not, then you probably are not giving the characters and events the attention that you should be and that will negatively affect your writing. Think about it. I know it sounds weird, but it’s true. Happy writing!
