I remember a day many years ago when I was home sick with the flu. I was lying on the sofa, being totally miserable, and having nothing to do because I lived in the middle of the wilderness with no TV, I started creating my bucket list. I suspect this is something everyone does when they hit even their thirties like I was at the time. I had so many things on my list that it took two pages to hold it all. Having too many big ideas is a shortcoming for me, I guess. Still, I’ve done a lot of things on that list, and one of the things that was most improbable was writing. My list had “write a mystery fiction novel” on it. I had written a lot of short essays and even some songs, but nothing more. The concept of writing fiction seemed elusive, but as the years went by, I had a few ideas. I think it also helped that I got a lot of practice writing budget proposals in my government job. I think that is where fiction really came to life for me. After all, I made up stuff that I thought we would do with all the money the state might allocate to my district, and the more creative and believable I could be helped me sell the ideas to the decision makers above me. It was Fiction 101 for me…LOL
Okay, so I’m exaggerating and being tongue in cheek, but the truth is any writing is a start toward your goal of being a writer. You can practice all your skills in many genres, even business writing. Don’t hesitate to have big writing ideas, and don’t hesitate to put them into action.
