When my son was in little league, everyone got a trophy on the team. No one was given any recognition (ever) as an individual. I think there is a lot of good in complimenting the group as a whole, but individual recognition is important too. When everyone gets a trophy, it means less…and perhaps even nothing. My son doesn’t even want his trophies. When someone says to you individually that you are valued, that’s when it genuinely means something. When I served in the park service and the fire department, they always knew how to tell a person “Individually” that they mattered...at least they did for me. I don’t know if I did it as well as I should for my guys in those organizations, but I hope so. The comparison I can make is also biblical and it’s what really make the issue stand out for me. God loves us all it says in Christianity, but it also says God loves us and knows us individually down the the very hairs numbered on our heads and died for us individually. Christianity would be meaningless and indistinguishable from all the other religions of the world without a God who valued us individually. With that as a model, I think it’s important for me to do likewise in my life.
Take the time today to tell someone you have noticed and you value their contribution, whatever it might be…and I bet you can come up with something. Maybe even a lot of somethings that have never been expressed to that person. Wife, son, daughter, co-worker. Make their day!
